Just back from a great trip to Salt Lake City, performing with Natalie Cole.
However, this was a a special experience, because Natalie was joined by the 350-member Mormon Taberncale Choir and 100-piece orchestra. We filmed over 3 days for a PBS Special that will air next Christmas, and will then be released on DVD. Very cool weekend!

In and Out of Town
Recently back from a great European trip with the amazing Natalie Cole. We played in Vienna, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Basel in Switzerland. What a trip. The sights, the sounds, the FOOD.... I can't get enough of Viennese coffee and pastries, Polish borsch soup, and of course Swiss chocolate. The shows were very well received. This tour we were joined by Larry Koonse on guitar and Edwin Livingston on bass, who are two of my favorite people.
Back in the states now; boy. it sure is nice to be busy playing great music with great people.
A few upcoming shows to take note of:
- Nov 20 and 21 with Ms. Natalie Cole in Sacramento and Spokane
- Nov 22 at Charlie O's with young guitar phenom Graham Dechter
Details on the "Calendar" page.
Take care, keep the music flowing!

I was blessed by the Dalai Lama!
In Memphis with Natalie Cole, and a small number of people were allowed to meet the Dalai Lama and take pictures. I was one of the lucky few!
And then we listened to him speak for over an hour on peace, compassion, and a multitude of other topics. This was one of the most memorable days of my life! I learned so much, and heard a spiritual leader speak live. What more could you ask for???
Off on the road again this week to the Midwest and Canada with Natalie, then to Europe at the end of October! Check the calendar for details.

Hollywood Bowl!!!
As some of you may know, I've had the pleasure of playing piano for Ms. Natalie Cole for the past 6 months. It has been a highlight of my career! She successfully received a kidney transplant last in May, and we had our first show back at Anthology in San Diego and it was KILLIN'. She will be returning to the stage again this Wednesday Sept 9 for a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, of which I will be a part of! I'm elated to share the stage with her.

A Relaxing Christmas Day
At the end of a busy month, I got a chance to relax today and enjoy time with my family in San Jose, CA. With a good strong storm kicking off the day, it cleared up and the beautiful blue sky finally came through. What a great holiday.
My experience on the Tonight Show with Natalie Cole was a lot of fun. She sang Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" (the outstanding Johnny Mandel arrangement), and sang it beautifully at that! It's so wonderful to be playing with her, when she's picking up speed again in her career.
Back to L.A. gigging again this weekend.... come out if you can!

Greetings from Kansas City
Hi, and thanks for visiting my website!
I've had quite a week!! Here's a rundown...
-Phoenix, Arizona: with the wonderful Natalie Cole. It was my first show with her, and it went really well. Her music book is full of wonderful arrangements, by Alan Broadbent, Johnny Mandel, John Clayton, and Nan Schwartz. And her great MD Gail made it all easy and fun. What a joy! More touring is coming up in January and February, stay tuned for that.
- Seattle, Washington: with vocalist Sara Gazarek. This was a great yearly Xmas show put on my 88.3 KPLU. I met a WHOLE lot of really amazing and beautiful people, who are all about the music.
- Topeka, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri: With Sara (in Topeka) and a trio show (in KC at Jardine's). Bassist Bob Bowman and drummer Tommy Ruskin delighted me with their great playing! And all the wonderful supporters of the Topeka Jazz Workshop, as well as Bill Doty and Beena from Jardine's
Keep the music playing!

New Chapters
Greetings, and welcome to my website!
Thanks for visiting. I hope you enjoy yourself while you're here.
I was going to have the pleasure of working with Ms. Natalie Cole for the month of October, but the tour was just cancelled. Natalie is in poor health at the moment, and needs to take some time to rest and recover. Hopefully I'll get a chance to work with her someday! Get better Natalie!
I'll be at Steamers (Sundays) and the Mint (Mondays) a lot in September... please come out and support live jazz. We need it!!
I begin my adjunct faculty teaching at Soka University last week, and it's going great. I love my students! A beautiful campus, and a wonderful faculty, I'm honored to be a part of this institution. Check it out at

My next record is slated to be recorded in December!! More later.
Be well, keep the music playing.

Well, I turned 30 years old last Friday August 1st. It's a big move for me... lots of conflicted feelings.... a lot of self-introspection too.
Just kidding. I'm fine, the same ol' Josh Nelson. Good times. Actually, I had a kick-ass BBQ with all my friends. What would this world be like without friends? Thank the universe for friends.
I'm in San Jose this weekend (Saturday Aug. 9th) at the San Jose Jazz Festival with Dayna Stephens, an INCREDIBLE tenor saxophonist. If you're in that area, please come out and support!
More dates with that band on the Calendar section.
Take care, have a great August 2008. Go Barack!!

Just back from a great little mini-tour of the San Francisco Bay Area with drummer Lorca Hart (one of my great friends) and bassist Edwin Livingston (becoming a great friend). We played all over, and had a stellar performance at the Fillmore Jazz Festival. We love San Fran! True listeners reside there.
Now off to Seattle to play at Jazz Alley with Sara Gazarek and the band (Hamilton Price, Zach Harmon). It's one of Sara's favorite clubs to play- it's her hometown! If you're in the area, come check us out! We have some new material we'll be playing through too.
And then off to the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Festival this coming weekend. I'll be performing there with the Jennifer Leitham Trio and the Phil Norman Tentet.
Have a great day!

A Beautiful Day
Hi, welcome to my website. Thanks for coming!
What a gorgeous day in Southern California. On my daily jog, I marveled at the gift Nature has given to us here in this part of the country. We are truly lucky for the great weather!
Lots of local Los Angeles area gigs this month. No shows with my bands this month, but plenty of other fun gigs. Check the Calendar page while you're here.
Good News!
A short film I recently composed the score to, called "Use as Directed", had it's Cannes Film Festival debut a few weeks ago! The film was in the Short Film Corner of the Marché du Film in the market. Apparently it was well received!
Also, 3 of my songs I wrote for vocalist Sara Gazarek are being arranged and published for jazz choir! Wow, never saw something like that coming. I look forward to hearing what Sound Music Publications (Edmonds, Washington) comes up with. Thanks to Frank DeMeiro for asking me to join the composer roster there.
Keep the music playing.

End of An Era
Hello, thanks for visiting my website!
First of all, Prayers and Warm Energy to the victims of the giant earthquake that hit Western China.
On a much less earth-changing note: I am no longer with the Native Language label. While I enjoyed making Sara Gazarek's 3 records (and my record Let it Go) with them, it's time to part ways. Joe Sherbanee and Robb Robinson are great guys, and I wish the very best to them and their future in the music business.
Off to work on music for the next record! It will be recorded in August, and out in the fall this year.
Thanks so much for stopping by, I hope you have a good time while you are here.
Keep the music playing-

Hola from Mexico
Down in San Miguel de Allende, visiting my mom Sandy, who moved here about 8 months ago. What a gorgeous city. It's an old colonial town, very Spanish influenced. It could pass for a city in Europe. Wonderful people, wonderful buildings, wonderful food. Wow. I can't wait to come back.
I'll be back at the Mint for the Monday night Groove Pocket on April 28. Down in San Diego on the 30th at Anthology too.
i hope you enjoy your stay at joshnelsonmusic.com. We know you have your choice of jazz pianists, and we're delighted you have chosen us. If there's anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please let us know.

Recent gigs of note: I played at the Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Manila Jazz Festival in March with singer Sara Gazarek. That was wild!
Book I'm reading now: Haruki Murakami- "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman"
Take care! Keep the music playing...

Thanks for visiting my website! I hope you enjoy yourself.
Check out the Music page, the gallery, and drop me a note on the contact page while you're here.
In the beautiful city of Tokyo Japan now, performing at my favorite club The Cotton Club with Sara Gazarek (voc), Sam Minaie (bass), and Zach Harmon (drums). We're having a ball! Great music, great people, great hang. I highly recommend a visit to Japan if you've never been.
And then I'm back in LA for the 2nd half of March, so please come check out some shows then. Especially March 30th at Rosalie and Alva's for a duo concert with wonderful guitarist John Storie. Go to the Calendar page for more details.
Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends legendary jazz bassist Dennis Irwin, who passed away on Monday. You will be missed!
With much love,
josh
